Alma Hassell, M.S., M.Div., BCC

Alma Hassell serves as an Instructor in the Department of Patient Counseling for VCU College of Health Professions and Manager of Clinical Services in the Department of Pastoral Care. She is a Board Certified Chaplain in the Association of Professional Chaplains, serving on both regional and national committees. She holds a Bachelor's degree from the College of New Rochelle, School of New Resources in Psychology and Humanities; a MS degree in Patient Counseling from Virginia Commonwealth University, Department of Patient Counseling and a M.Div. from Emory University, Candler School of Theology. In 1997, she was ordained by the Memorial Baptist Church in New York and received ecclesiastical endorsement through the Alliance of Baptists.

Before joining the faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University, Ms. Hassell served as an Associate Minister and Director of Missions to Women and Children at Memorial Baptist Church in New York and later served as Director of Children’s Ministry at Epworth United Methodist Church in Atlanta, Georgia.

Ms. Hassell holds appointments on several hospital and university committees. In the future she plans to further her studies in Liberation Theology. In addition to continuing the volunteer work she is currently involved in, Ms. Hassell also plans to provide bereavement support to families. Currently, she serves as an Associate Minister to a local congregation in the form of Spiritual Leader and Counselor.
