Elizabeth Seward of the Virginia Commonwealth University College of Health Professions (CHP) has been named VCU’s 2025 Research Administrator of the Year.

As senior research administrator, Seward oversees both pre- and post-award processes, supporting funding efforts, overseeing college budgets, and ensuring that research projects run smoothly and align with university guidelines. Within CHP, she plays a key role in supporting principal investigators (PIs) and coordinating the many moving parts that make research possible.

“It’s rewarding to see our researchers excel and know we’ve played a part in that,” Seward said.

When Seward learned she had been named VCU’s Research Administrator of the Year, she was caught by surprise. The nomination came from a former employee, something she found especially thoughtful. For her, the recognition feels both validating and meaningful, representing years of behind-the-scenes work that often goes unnoticed.

What motivates Seward most is seeing the growing recognition of her field.

“The change that is happening; research administration being recognized and being seen as important,” she said.

Seward is especially excited about the new undergraduate minor, Research Ecosystems, created by Elizabeth Fortune and Laurie Cathers, which introduces students to the field of research administration—something that has never been done before.

Seward is quick to highlight the people around her who set a high standard for teamwork and dedication. She expressed gratitude to former supervisors Felicia Harris, who encouraged her to apply for her current role, and Christie Atkins, who set a positive tone in the CHP Dean’s office. She also appreciates her current supervisor, Maecy Richmond, for providing helpful pre-award guidance, as well as the entire CHP finance and research team—Kelton, Gail, Margie, Cyndi, and Elisa—for fostering a supportive and collaborative environment.

“The award showcases the consistency and excellence within the CHP research and finance team,” she said.

Beyond her day-to-day responsibilities, Seward is deeply involved in the university community. She serves as onboarding co-chair of the Research Career Community Committee and is an active member of the CHP Staff Advisory Board, the CHP Events Committee, and the Thrive Committee. Outside of work, she volunteers through the RPS Reading Buddy Program, helping elementary students build confidence and a love of reading.

“My goal this year was to put myself out there more,” Seward said. “This award shows me that I can do that and make a difference.”

“Elizabeth brings such a strong mix of expertise, creativity, and kindness to everything she does,” said Melanie Pilco, one of Seward’s former colleagues. “She’s a quiet but powerful force in making research administration better at VCU.”

Seward is the fourth member of the CHP finance and research team to receive the VCU Research Administrator of the Year award. Previous winners include Brenda Morris, Maecey Richmond, and Kelton Rasmussen.
