VCU College of Health Professions hosts second annual Rehabilitation Counseling program agency fair

The VCU College of Health Professions (CHP) Department of Rehabilitation Counseling recently hosted its second annual agency fair. Representatives from all over the local Richmond community attended, bringing together a day of connection and professional development.
Denise Hall, clinical coordinator for the Department of Rehabilitation Counseling organized the event, which provides students with the opportunity to engage with various community agency representatives, and even gain potential job opportunities. Agencies representatives offered students practicum and internship possibilities, while also sharing their experiences and insights to help students explore different career paths.
Hall has served as the clinical coordinator at the college since 2015, and she previously taught for the department. As a1992 graduate of the program, Hall has extensive experience in her field as a licensed professional counselor (LPC), nationally certified counselor (NCC), and certified rehabilitation counselor (CRC). Hall also provides clinical supervision and teaches in the department, while helping students develop professional skills to enter the workforce after graduation.
For Clarissa Burnett, a first year student at VCU CHP, the fair was an important way to enhance community building in Richmond and at VCU.
“I learn best by talking and connecting – it’s how I like to build relationships,” Burnett said. “This event is a wonderful opportunity to meet partners in the community, and start planting seeds of connection. It really bridges a huge gap for students who are new to the area.”
Amanda Mbata, clinical director for local organization Safe Harbor, emphasized the importance of events like this for students. She attended to share information and guidance to students seeking interest in working in the field.
“When I come to events like this, students ask real-life questions, which is always great,” Mbata said. “I hope they can learn about balance – how to care for their own mental health while helping others.”
According to Hall, the second annual Rehabilitation Counseling Agency Fair event exceeded expectations, and created an event for students and agencies to come together, fostering new connections and opportunities. The event continues to bridge together real world experiences and academic skills in order to better prepare our future health leaders at the College of Health Professions.
