The VCU College of Health Professions and School of Nursing co-hosted “Our St. Philip Experience,” a Black History Month event, featuring Rev. Dr. Harold Pinkston, former chaplain, and Ms. Virginia Roane, and Burlette Trent, graduates of the all-Black St. Philip School of Nursing. The three guests shared stories of their experiences as students at St. Philip, as well their thoughts on how their training and past shaped their futures.
Founded in 1920 by the Medical College of Virginia, the predecessor of VCU, in conjunction with the St. Philip Hospital that treated the local Black community, the St. Philip School of Nursing trained Black women as nurses during the segregation era.
