Aug 30 - Grief Awareness Day

A day to recognize the experience of grief, both personally and collectively.
A day to remember the wide scope of grief;
the grief of losing a loved one, a job, a relationship, a sense of security, or a desired future.
We name and share our grief to be strengthened in the knowledge that we are not alone;
there is light in the darkness.

Each year on Aug. 30 marks National Grief Awareness Day, which is dedicated to the different ways individuals cope with loss while offering resources and support to those who are grieving. It is a day to recognize the experience of grief, both personally and collectively, and a time to show support for those who carry the burden that comes with grief.

Whether grief is the result of losing a loved one, a job, a relationship, a sense of security, a desired future, or even experiencing substantial life changes, grief comes in many forms and impacts every person in its own distinct manner.

This year, our Department of Patient Counseling and the VCU Health Department of Pastoral Care, invite us to take part in collective remembrance by lighting a candle wherever you are on Aug. 30 at 7 am, 12 pm or 7 pm, or whenever most convenient. You can also simply turn on your phone light. In addition, everyone who takes part may receive a butterfly, containing seeds that will bloom year after year to symbolize hope in years to come.

If you would like to receive an LED candle and a butterfly to share with your team, contact spiritualcare@vcuhealth.org. Show your support by sharing on social media: #shinealight #unitedinhope #notalone
